Choosing the Right Contractor

Use this checklist with any contractor you're considering — including us.

Ask every contractor these questions

  • Are you licensed, bonded and insured — and can I see a certificate of insurance?
  • Will you perform a load calculation, or are you sizing based on the old equipment?
  • Will you pull the permit, and is the inspection included in the price?
  • Are your technicians employees or subcontractors, and are they background checked?
  • What exactly is included in the quoted price, and what could add cost mid-job?
  • What warranty covers your labor, separate from the manufacturer's parts warranty?
  • Can you provide three references for similar projects in my area?

Red flags worth walking away from

  • A quote given over the phone without seeing your home
  • Pressure tactics like 'today only' pricing on a major installation
  • No written scope of work, or a proposal that's a single lump-sum number
  • A recommendation to replace equipment without showing you the failed component
  • Requests for large cash deposits before any material is delivered
  • Unwillingness to pull permits, or a suggestion that permits aren't necessary

Good HVAC work is invisible when it's done right, which unfortunately makes it easy to cut corners on. The questions above are designed to surface those corners before you sign anything. If a contractor is annoyed that you asked, that's your answer.
