DIY Maintenance Tips
Simple things you can do yourself between professional visits — and the ones you should leave alone.
Safe for homeowners
- Change filters on schedule and write the install date on the frame
- Keep two feet of clearance around the outdoor unit; trim shrubs back
- Rinse the outdoor coil gently with a garden hose (power off at the disconnect first)
- Pour a cup of distilled vinegar into the condensate drain access twice a season
- Vacuum supply and return registers, and don't close vents in unused rooms
- Check that the thermostat isn't in direct sun or above a heat source
- Replace thermostat batteries every fall before heating season
Leave these to a technician
- Anything involving refrigerant — handling it without certification is illegal
- Opening the electrical compartment of the furnace or air handler
- Adjusting gas pressure or bypassing any safety switch
- Cleaning the indoor evaporator coil or blower wheel
- Duct sealing or duct modification inside walls and attics
If a system trips a breaker more than once, stop resetting it and call. Repeated resets on a failing motor or compressor turn a repair into a replacement.
