Repair or Replace?
Work through these five questions and you'll usually have your answer in a few minutes.
Five questions
1. How old is the system?
Under 10 years: repair is usually right. 10–15: it depends on repair cost. Over 15: replacement deserves serious consideration.
2. What's the repair cost × age?
Multiply the quoted repair by the system's age in years. If that exceeds replacement cost, replace.
3. Which refrigerant does it use?
Systems on phased-out refrigerants get more expensive to service every year. That pushes toward replacement.
4. How many repairs in three years?
Two or more significant repairs in three years usually signals a system in decline, not bad luck.
5. Are you comfortable?
If rooms are uneven or humidity is a problem, a repair keeps the discomfort. A properly designed replacement can fix it.
We give an honest recommendation either way, and we will happily repair a system we could have sold you a replacement for. If replacement is genuinely the better value, we'll show you the operating-cost math and the financing options rather than asking you to take our word for it.
