Repair or Replace? A Straight Answer on Aging HVAC Systems

There is a simple rule of thumb that works surprisingly well: multiply the repair cost by the age of the system. If the result is more than the cost of a new system, replace it. A $600 repair on a four-year-old unit is easy. The same repair on a 16-year-old unit is throwing money at a system that will fail again.
Refrigerant type is the second factor. Systems built for older, phased-out refrigerants get more expensive to service every year as supply tightens. If your unit needs a significant refrigerant charge and runs an obsolete blend, that alone can justify replacement.
Third, look at your utility bills across comparable summers. A system losing efficiency quietly costs money every month, and modern variable-speed equipment can cut cooling costs meaningfully in Colorado's swings between hot, dry summers and hard winter cold.
Finally, consider comfort, not just function. Uneven temperatures between floors, humidity you can feel, and rooms that never quite cool are usually design problems that a straight equipment swap won't fix — which is why a load calculation should be part of any replacement quote.
