7 Signs You Need AC Repair Before Summer Hits
June 18, 2026 · 6 min read
Air conditioners rarely fail without warning. Weeks before a total breakdown, most systems give off small signals that are easy to miss if you aren't looking for them. Catching those signals early is usually the difference between a same-day repair and a costly replacement in the middle of a heat wave.
Start with airflow. Hold your hand in front of a supply vent in the room farthest from the air handler. If the air feels weak or barely cool while closer rooms feel fine, you may have a duct leak, a clogged filter, or a failing blower motor. Weak airflow also makes coils freeze, which turns a $200 repair into a compressor problem.
Next, listen. Short cycling — the system switching on and off every few minutes — usually points to a refrigerant issue, an oversized system, or a thermostat placed in direct sun. Grinding or squealing means bearings; a hard click followed by silence often means a failing capacitor, which is one of the least expensive parts on the system.
Finally, pay attention to smell and moisture. A musty odor when the system starts suggests biological growth on the evaporator coil or in the drain pan. Water pooling near the indoor unit means the condensate drain is blocked, and that water will find drywall before it finds a floor drain.
None of these symptoms mean you need a new system. Most are wear items on an otherwise healthy unit. What they do mean is that a diagnostic visit now costs far less than a replacement in July.
